ETC Teacher Education
Developing Teachers for Total Education
Education for Total Consciousness (ETC) places the teacher at the heart of the educational process.
ETC teacher education is designed to help educators understand the principles of ETC and develop the ability to apply them in their own teaching.
The programme begins with the central ETC proposition:
Education must integrate objective knowledge of the world with subjective knowledge of the self.
Rather than treating this as a theory to be learned separately from classroom practice, teacher education connects understanding with experience, observation, practice and reflection.
Who is it for?
The programme is intended for educators who wish to explore a more integrated approach to teaching and learning.
It can be adapted for:
- School teachers and teacher educators
- Educational leaders and administrators
- Teacher-training institutions
- Educators working in higher and continuing education
- Others interested in the application of ETC in education
What does the training involve?
ETC teacher education combines study with practical experience.
Depending on the programme, participants may engage in:
Study
Understanding the principles and educational philosophy of ETC.
Workshops
Exploring ETC through discussion, activities and practical exercises.
Demonstration Classes
Observing how ETC principles are expressed in actual teaching.
Practice
Developing lessons and teaching approaches based on ETC.
Observation and Reflection
Receiving feedback and reflecting on classroom experience.
Mentoring
Continued guidance as participants develop their understanding and practice.
The emphasis is on developing the teacher’s ability to see the whole learner, the whole lesson and the wider relationships within which learning takes place.
Experience in teacher development
IVPT has conducted ETC workshops, conferences and teacher-development programmes since 2000.
Teacher education has been an important part of the development of ETC, alongside its implementation through Isa Viswa Vidyalayam and continuing research into the approach.
Programmes have been conducted for educators in India and introduced internationally through IVPT’s wider educational engagement.
Training formats
ETC teacher education can be designed according to the needs and context of the participating institution or group.
Formats include:
Residential Programme
An intensive programme combining study, practice, observation and guided experience. A longer residential format may be particularly suitable for educators beginning a deeper study of ETC.
Part-Time Programme
A programme conducted alongside participants’ existing teaching responsibilities, with regular sessions, practical assignments, classroom application and mentoring.
The duration and structure can be developed in consultation with the participating institution.
Continuing development
ETC teacher education is not intended to end with a training programme. Developing the ability to apply ETC is a continuing process of study, practice, observation and reflection.
IVPT can work with schools, teacher-training institutions and educational organisations to explore programmes suited to their needs.
